I’m flying soon from Switzerland to Isle of Wight.
Actually I have two questions for the transit.
As I will have a taxi available, would you recommend for time effectiveness and “safety” (in term of not missing a connection):
- to fly to London Gatwick or Heathrow, as there is no connection to Southampton in “summer”?
- to take the Hovercraft in portsmouth (then road A3?) or the Redfunnel in Southampton (then M3) ?
Thank you very much!
Wahou HJ THAT’S an answer….thank you very much.
Actually it would be more kind of “private driver”….and the company pays it for me and my colleague.
Travel to portsmouth area from Gatwick Airport?
I’m looking for anyone travelling from Gatwick Airport to Portsmouth area on February. I saw there will be cancellations on train services and thought maybe someone out there would like to share a taxi.
There may be a bus shuttle service, if trains are not running, or you could use National Express coaches, which run services to Portsmouth/Southsea from Gatwick. Taxi’s that pick up at the airport have to pay a fee to the airport authority, which they pass on to the customer!
Can you get a flight to Bournemouth or Southampton? Southampton airport is only twenty minutes away from the IoW ferry terminals
If you have to come to Gatwick or Heathrow, I would say Southampton Red Funnel is slightly easier to reach (and exit) than the Hovercraft in Portsmouth (Southsea).
However, the important thing is where you want to land on IoW. From Portsmouth you will arrive in Ryde on the NE of the island (with a rail link to the SE of the island). From Southampton, you will arrive in Cowes in the central north of the island. If you want to get directly to the NW of the island (Yarmouth), you will need to catch a ferry from Lymington!
